Talk:Incrementing the RPG format version number
Bob the Hamster: "depreciate" just like appreciate except backwards
Mike C.: Oh, that was intentional? I thought it was a typo. I suppose that either word could fit, since the functionality of the version number has Incrementing the RPG format version number been reduced substantially.
Consider being user friendly[edit]
The Mad Cacti: Why don't we just increment the version number once per major release. If a game was created/edited with a version of Custom newer than the version of Game being used to run it, then the game might not work correctly. Warning the player that they should get a newer release of Game is the only sane thing to do! If you wanted to differentiate (for say, the benefit of people inspecting the RPG file) we could instead add a second version number for the release of Custom used (and/or that SVN revision number idea), and give the player a slightly different message; "Warning: upgrade game.exe" instead of "Warning: unsupported RPG format, bad things might happen; upgrade game.exe"
Bob the Hamster: I was basically advocating incrementing the version number once per stable release (assuming any format changes actually took place in that release). Sorry if I did not say so clearly enough.
