This error sometimes occurs on Windows 2000 or Windows XP if the files Windows needs to run DOS programs have been damaged or deleted. Microsoft has information on how to fix this problem at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=324767

This sort of file corruption should normally never happen, so if you see this error message, you should be asking yourself: Do I have a Virus? Is there spyware on my computer? Is my hard drive broken?

In some situations, the named file may not be config.nt or autoexec.nt, and might instead be something like C:/~ . In that case, the instructions on the microsoft website will not help you restore the damaged file, but the cause of the problem is probably still the same. Virus or spyware.
